08:00 Ocean Viking departs from Syracuse.

July 30, 2024

06:15 Ocean Viking spots a boat from the Bridge.
06:59 Ocean Viking calls the JRCC Tripoli via Sat Phone, no answer.
07:07 Ocean Viking emails the JRCC tripoli (ITMRCC, MRCC Malta in CC) about two boats in distress.
07:10 Ocean Viking launches the RHIBs for a closer assessmet.

The email states:

the wooden boat is unseaworthy, inapt for navigation in high seas, overcrowded with about 85 people on board, including children, women, all exposed to the elements, no Life Saving Appliances available. These people are requesting to be rescued.
It is ascertained that the distress phase exists as the persons on board are threatened by grave and imminent danger of being lost and require immediate assistance.
Ocean Viking tried to contact competent authority to report above situation. Ocean Viking called via Sat Phone Libya JRCC; No Answer.
This is a case of force majeure (ref. SOLAS Art. IV (b)) imposing to retrieve persons in danger of being lost at sea, as stipulated by the relevant International Maritime Conventions, therefore Ocean Viking will proceed to the assistance of these persons in distress, while keeping competent RCCs duly informed.

08:25 Ocean Viking launches the RHIBs.

The email states:

the wooden boat is unseaworthy, inapt for navigation in high seas, overcrowded with about 80 people on board, 2 persons suffer fuel burns, all exposed to the elements, no Life Saving Appliances available.

These people are requesting to be rescued.

It is ascertained that the distress phase exists as the persons on board are threatened by grave and imminent danger of being lost and require immediate assistance.

Ocean Viking called via Sat Phone competent RCC; No Answer.
