At 08:51 UTC, MV Ocean Viking, in position 33 28’N 013 49’E, spotted an overcrowded rubber boat. Apprehension
exists as to the safety of the persons on board.MV Ocean Viking swiftly altered Course Heading towards the Target, about 7 NM away, for further assessment and
ready to provide first assistance.

the elements, no Life Saving Appliances available. It is ascertained that the distress phase exists as the persons on board are
threatened by grave and imminent danger of being lost and require immediate assistance.

At 09:13 UTC MV Ocean Viking is 2.0 NM from the subject boat and observes what follows:
The rubber boat is unseaworthy, inapt for navigation in high seas, overcrowded with about 50 people on board, all
exposed to the elements, no Life Saving Appliances available.
It is ascertained that the distress phase exists as the persons on board are threatened by grave and imminent danger
of being lost and require immediate assistance.
This is a case of force majeure (ref.SOLAS Art. IV (b)) imposing to retrieve persons in danger of being lost at sea, as
stipulated by the relevant International Maritime Conventions, therefore MV Ocean Viking will proceed to the
assistance of these persons in distress, while keeping competent RCCs duly informed.

Our aircraft Seabird 1 spotted a distress case, which we assigned the number DC 452.
Please find below all information about DC 452:
– in position 33d24mN 013d48mE at 0900 UTC
– rubber boat grey
– apx. 50 people on board, the boat is heavily overcrowded
– COG Heading north
– SOG erratic 2 Kts, engine on and off
– people sitting on the sponsons
– there is no life saving equipment
This is an urgent distress case and immediate assistance is required.
Please take all necessary steps to rescue these people.

Please be informed that at 07:20 Z Ocean Viking RHIBs assessed the situation: the rubber boat is unseaworthy, inapt for
navigation in high seas, overcrowded with about 50 people on board, , all exposed to the elements, no Life Saving Appliances available.
These people are requesting to be rescued. It is ascertained that the distress phase exists as the persons on board are threatened by grave and imminent danger of being lost and require immediate assistance. MV Ocean Viking tried to contact competent authority to report above situation on all the following numbers:

Please be informed that, at 10:09UTC in position 33 26,0 N 013 47,6 E, MV Ocean Viking completed the recovery
operation of the persons in distress. 54 (number to be confirmed) shipwrecked persons have been safely brought on
board MV Ocean Viking.
The breakdown of the survivors and complete information will follow in Maritime Incident Report.
Empty rubber boat, grey colour, left adrift in this position and marked as “OV17062402”.
At 10:10UTC MV Ocean Viking sent Securite Message over VHF ch. 16 to all ships informing of empty rubber boat adrift.
MV Ocean Viking is requesting a place of safety (as defined in the Annex to the 1979 SAR Convention, paragraph 1.3.2
and in the IMO Resolution MSC.167(78)) to promptly disembark all xxx survivors who are currently on board.
