Support on board

Frequently asked questions about voluntary work aboard the AQUARIUS

SOS MEDITERRANEE receives numerous requests for volunteering aboard the AQUARIUS. We are very happy to receive so many offers of support, but unfortunately we aren’t able to accommodate every request and skillset.  In this regard, we ask for your understanding. Below you can find our frequently asked questions. We ask that should you fulfill all the required criteria, you give us a little time to respond to your application and refrain from further inquiries.

Are you looking for volunteers aboard the ship?

By now we have a big pool of experienced Search-and-Rescue team members, but we are regularly looking for new competent team members.

Which criteria do I have to fulfill, in order to become part of the Search and Rescue- team?

Prior maritime, or rescue experience is required. Physical and mental resilience in extreme situations are equally important.

Our medical partner Doctors without borders, provide all medical care on board. Therefore, we do not look for any medical staff.

What does the team aboard look like?

Our team is made up of our SAR-Team (Search-and-Rescue), which includes one SAR coordinator and seven to nine SAR-members. We have a communication officer and a photographer. In addition, there is the medical team of Doctors without Borders, as well as up to three journalists.

For how long do you stay onboard the Aquarius as a team member?

One rotation in the rescue zone lasts three weeks. Afterwards the Aquarius returns to our homeport in Sicily, for a crew change, for up to three days. Team members are asked to stay aboard for at least two rotations (six weeks) and for a maximum of three rotations (nine weeks). Due to the long training period and the high demand on board, we do not make any exception to these rules. This is in both your and our best interest.

Who do I contact to work as a volunteer on board?

If you fit the criteria, we look forward to receiving your application to become a member of the SOS MEDITERRANEE rescue team:
